How to Choose a Real Estate Agent in Indianapolis (What Actually Matters)
If you're thinking about buying or selling a home in the Indianapolis Metro Area, one of the most important decisions you'll make is choosing the right real estate agent.
There are a lot of agents out there. Some are excellent. Some are...less so.
So, how do you tell the difference?
Here's what actually matters--and what we recommend every client look for before making a decision.
1) Look for Local Expertise (Not Just a License)
Real estate is hyper-local.
An agent who understands the nuances between neighborhoods like Geist Reservoir, Fishers, Carmel, Washington Township, and all the other different parts of Indianapolis will be able to:
- price your home more accurately
- anticipate buyer behavior
- guide you through market-specific strategies
Be sure to ask:
- What market trends are you seeing right now in this neighborhood?
- Where are current inventory levels?
2) Read Reviews Carefully (They Tell a Story)
Online review--especially Google reviews--are one of the best ways to understand what working with an agent is actually like.
Don't just look at the star rating. Read the comments.
Look for patterns:
- Do clients mention communication?
- Do they feel supported during stressful situations?
- Were there problems--and how were they handled?
Consistent, detailed 5-star reviews usually indicate a reliable and professional experience.
3) Evaluate Their Marketing (This is a BIG ONE for Sellers)
If you're selling a home, marketing matters--a lot.
At a minimum, your home should have:
- professional photography
- strong Multiple Listing Service (MLS) exposure
- clear, compelling descriptions
But stronger agents go further:
- dedicated property websites
- detailed write-ups about the home and neighborhood
- thoughtful online presence that helps buyers connect emotionally
The goal is more than to just "list" your home--it's to position it in the best possible way.
4) Pay Attention to How They Communicate
Your agent should
- respond promptly
- explain things clearly
- keep you informed without overwhelming you
Real estate transactions can get complicated quickly. You want someone who can:
- stay calm under pressure
- solve problems
- guide you through decisions without adding stress
If communication feels off early on, it doesn't usually improve later.
5) Ask About Strategy--Not Just Price
For sellers especially, pricing is only part of the equation.
Be sure to ask:
- How would you position my home in the market?
- What would your first 7-10 days of marketing look like?
- How do you handle multiple offers--or a slower market?
A strong agent will have a clear, thoughtful plan--not just a number.
6) Make Sure It Feels Like a Good Fit
This part is often overlooked, but it matters a lot.
You'll be working closely with your agent, sometimes under stressful conditions. You want someone who:
- listens
- respects your goals
- communicates in a way that works for you
Trust your instincts here.
